Answering that question requires more than creative instinct. It requires research.

Through advanced neuroscience and brain imaging, we've studied how fragrance interacts with the brain in real time—collecting more than 200 million data points to better understand the connection between scent and emotion.

The result is a new approach to fragrance: one that's designed not only to smell beautiful, but to support the way you want to feel.

Understanding the Brain's Response to Scent

Smell is unlike any other sense.

When we inhale a fragrance, scent molecules travel directly to the limbic system—the part of the brain responsible for emotion, memory, and behavior. It's why a familiar fragrance can instantly transport you to a place, a person, or a feeling before you've had time to think about it.

To better understand these responses, our research partners developed InSituScanz™, an advanced brain-imaging capability that captures neural responses to fragrance in real time.

To date, more than 200 million data points have been collected, mapping how different fragrance ingredients activate specific regions of the brain associated with emotions such as joy, calm, focus, and relaxation.

Rather than relying solely on personal preference, this research allows us to understand how fragrance can be intentionally formulated to support emotional wellbeing.

The Research

Understanding emotion requires more than simply asking someone how they feel. Our research combines neuroscience with physiological data to create a more complete picture of how fragrance influences both the brain and the body.

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) allows researchers to observe which regions of the brain become active while participants experience fragrance.

By measuring changes in blood flow, researchers can identify the neural pathways associated with different emotional responses and understand how individual fragrance ingredients interact with the brain.

Electroencephalography (EEG)

Electroencephalography (EEG) measures electrical activity across the brain in real time.

This technology helps researchers understand how quickly the brain responds to fragrance and identify patterns associated with emotional states such as relaxation, alertness, focus, and positive mood.

Physiological Monitoring

Not every response to fragrance happens in the brain alone.

Researchers also monitor physiological markers—including heart rate and skin conductance—to understand how fragrance influences the body's stress response and overall physiological state.

These objective measurements provide another layer of insight into how scent affects both mind and body.

Mood Portraits™

Emotion isn't always easy to describe.

Mood Portraits™ were developed as a visual assessment tool that allows participants to communicate emotional responses beyond language. Instead of selecting predefined words, participants express how a fragrance makes them feel through imagery, providing a richer understanding of the emotional experience of scent.
