Prebiotics are essential for feeding the good bacteria in our gut, ensuring it is a healthy and diverse environment before adding other microbes (probiotics). Think of a prebiotic as fertilizer for your gut. Taking a probiotic without a prebiotic is like trying to plant a flower in bad soil. Without a healthy foundation, it will wilt and die. Research suggests that prebiotics are more important than probiotics. With both in our bestselling formula, 2 capsules a day covers all bases.
Our formula is designed specifically for people with IBS (the most common gastrointestinal complaint) to help reduce bloating, regulate digestion and keep your bathroom habits regular. We use a world-leading, science-backed probiotic, with confirmed efficacy based on over 20 years of clinical research, which has been proven to support those suffering with IBS. The spores in each capsule lie dormant until they reach the small intestine. Once activated, they begin to multiply, creating more and more good bacteria in the gut.
Your gut is connected to mental and physical health. Experts call the gut “the second brain” because it’s hard-wired to our mind through millions of nerves. Up to 95% of serotonin is made in the gut, one of the key “happy hormones” in the body responsible for a good mood. The gut is also connected to the skin through the gut-skin axis, and can signal when there are changes in the body. In short: the gut is the center of your body’s ecosystem, and keeping the microbiome nourished with good bacteria is essential to all-round health and wellbeing.
Up to 80% of our immune system lives in the gut. Your gut has a certain amount of space for bacteria, and that bacteria needs to be kept in a positive balance. So the “good” bacteria always outweighs the “bad”. When probiotics are ingested and reach the gut, they can crowd out the bad, pathogenic bacteria (the ones that could lead to disease and illness). Here, they can thrive and multiply, keeping the immune system healthy and functioning.
Ingredients
All of our ingredients are ethically and sustainably sourced, ensuring that each ingredient is clean, potent and proven.
Organic Inulin (from Jerusalem artichoke root)
Plant-based prebiotic
LactoSpore (Bacillus Coagulans)
Spore-based probiotic
Live bacteria often “dies” in transit before reaching the gut. To minimize depletion, we use spore-based Bacillus Coagulans that can withstand an acidic environment.
Our Delayed Release Capsule adds an additional layer of protection, challenging other probiotic strains that often don't make it past your stomach acid.
FAQs
There's a lot of research behind how and why we developed PREBIOTIC + PROBIOTIC this way. Firstly, it contains both prebiotics and probiotics, which makes it a synbiotic. Prebiotics are essential for feeding the good bacteria in our gut, ensuring it's a healthy and diverse baseline before adding in any other microbes (probiotics). Think of a prebiotic as fertilizer for your gut. We use a well-studied strain of probiotic bacteria in our formula called “Bacillus Coagulans”. In contrast to other probiotics which may boast “25 strains” of probiotics, each at very low dosages, we use a single strain at a very high dosage. In 2006, an expert panel proposed by the Food & Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization suggested that probiotic activity was more important than the source (i.e. Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, etc.), and the strain we use is proven to have very high activity. The difference between our probiotic and these other examples, is that Bacillus Coagulans is naturally protected with a proteinaceous “cocoon” that allows it to withstand the harsh effects of heat, oxygen, ultraviolet rays, and stomach acid. As soon as Bacillus Coagulans hits the alkaline environment of the small intestine, the protein shell dissolves and the organism activates. Most other probiotic strains don't usually make it past your stomach acid. The standardized and controlled extract that we use has also been the subject of a number of clinical trials, proving its effectiveness. This strain offers benefits far beyond those of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, especially as regards anti-inflammation. You can read a bit more about it here. We hope you don't mind the impromptu science lesson, and that this answers your question!
Some cheaper forms of magnesium stearate are made from animal fats, cottonseed oil or genetically modified oils. We would never consider using any of these routes, as they fall below our standards. The magnesium stearate we use is sourced from solvent-free, pesticide-free, non-GMO and sustainable palm oil, and the company we source it from are one of the founding members of the Roundtable On Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The amount of magnesium stearate in this blend is incredibly small, at just 6.75mg per capsule, which is about 1/1000 of a teaspoon.
Commercial inulin has a bad rep - it’s often used as a bulking agent in pre-packaged foods and can be highly processed. This processed, commercialized inulin can cause issues for people with IBS and other digestive conditions. The inulin we use couldn’t be more different. It’s there for its prebiotic benefits, not as a source of fiber. Secondly, our inulin is 100% organic and derived from organic artichoke; unprocessed and untreated. We work closely with our lab and product development team to ensure we’re using the most up to date research and ingredients in our formulas. A 2017 placebo, a randomized and double-blind trial lasting over 4 weeks, found that a small dose of daily inulin increased the presence of bifidobacteria (good bacteria) counts. You can read more here.
If there’s 1 product that everyone should take, it’s this. Whilst the formula has been developed with IBS sufferers in mind, we have loads of customers who use it daily who don’t have IBS and they see great results. Studies show your gut has an impact on the health of your entire body, connecting to your immune system, brain and skin. So, we believe taking pre- and probiotics is a great place to start when it comes to looking after your overall health.
There’s no need, all of our formulas are temperature stable, and we put them in amber glass jars to protect from UV rays. Just make sure to keep them out of direct sunlight, and somewhere you’ll remember to take them daily, like your bathroom shelf or bedside table.
Pre- and probiotics only stay in the gut short-term. This means they enter the gut, interact with the microbes there to grow more good bacteria, then make a swift exit. So, taking your supplements consistently is key to keeping the good bacteria in your gut topped up.
