Embrace the Energy: The Power of Sound with Zoe Gitter
DJ Zoe Gitter, from LA, explores the powerful energy exchange of performance, forming a deep ritualistic connection to sound and the joy of jasmine-scented summers in Ibiza.
Can you tell us about how you got into DJing?
I got into DJing because at the time I felt like there weren't enough women represented in the space and I'd always been really passionate about music and wanted to share my tastes with other people.
What's your earliest memory of connecting to music?
My earliest memory of connecting to music was my dad playing me his record collection that he's had since he was like 12 years old, and him sharing with me his favorite albums that shaped who he is today.
How does music or sound bring you energy? Or how do you use it to relax?
I'm listening to calming sleep frequencies pretty much every single night of my life. So it's now quite a ritual that relaxes me after a high energy performance. I'm also sober, so music is the key thing that keeps me awake as much as it has the ability to put me to sleep, and I find there's a lot of power from just being really connected to sound.
What gives you energy and what helps you wind down and recover?
Spending time with people that inspire me brings me energy and joy. Magnesium helps me wind down and recover.
How would you summarise the essence of summer?
The energy of summer is joy, and the smell of jasmine.
Describe the energy of Ibiza? What attracted you to it, why do you love it?
The energy of the island is frenetic. I was attracted to it because some of my biggest inspirations in the music world spend their summers here and it's an amazing balance of deeply rich musical history with an amazing, relaxing vacation.
Lastly, can you talk to us about the cycle and transfer of energy in your practice?
To be a performer is a massive exchange of energy. In my experience, when I'm on stage I'm pouring my whole heart into it - releasing, giving all the energy I have in my body. The fans' reaction is that exchange. It's an amazing return to feel people's energy from the audience sent back to me on stage. There's a tremendous amount of energy in these large performances.
